About Us

Hi, I’m Rachael, founder of Sensory Surroundings, and this business didn’t start from a plan. It started from real life.

Calm indoor sensory space with a teepee tent and nature-inspired play area for children.

My Story

As a parent of neurodivergent children, I’ve experienced first-hand how overwhelming daily life can become, especially when school environments and support systems are not the right fit. My youngest daughter struggled significantly within mainstream education, and for a long time I found myself supporting much of her learning from home while trying to navigate getting the right help in place.

During that time, creating calm, safe spaces at home became essential.

Quiet dens, sensory-friendly environments, and time outdoors were not just helpful ideas, they were what helped us get through the day.

That is where Sensory Surroundings began.

My Background

Alongside this lived experience, I have a background in environmental science, with both a BSc and MSc, and a long-standing interest in how natural environments support wellbeing. This has always influenced the ideas I share and the products I have chosen, particularly around outdoor play, nature-based calming spaces, and sensory-friendly environments.

What You’ll Find Here

Over the years, Sensory Surroundings has grown into a carefully curated collection of sensory products, alongside practical ideas and guidance for families navigating similar challenges.

Today, the focus is evolving.

While you will still find trusted product recommendations, Sensory Surroundings is increasingly centred around sharing what actually works in real life. This includes sensory space ideas, practical strategies to support regulation, and simple ways to create calmer, more supportive environments at home.

You will find a mix of guidance, ideas, and carefully curated product recommendations, all shaped by lived experience and informed by research into sensory needs and child development.

This space is for:

• Parents of neurodivergent children
• Families navigating overwhelm, school challenges, or sensory needs
• Schools, nurseries, and professionals supporting children with sensory needs
• Anyone looking to create calmer, more supportive environments

Everything shared here comes from years of real-world experience, research, and ongoing learning. It is not a substitute for professional advice, but it is a practical guide to what can help day to day.

If you would like practical ideas, gentle support, and simple ways to create calmer spaces at home or in the classroom, you can also join the email list for updates and resources.
